Operation Concept
The E-COMPASS data mining services (ECDMS) comprise 5 different modules to be described in more detail in System Overview and Service Modules. The service modules had been developed by different researchers in different research organisations. During the development of the service modules the services have been deployed in several different virtual machines that were distributed over a number of physical server and storage infrastructures in several countries. Within the testing phase the compute power and storage capacities on the different operational sites were limited, but sufficient for the user testing within the SME E-Compass project.
In order to provide the complete final development of the SME E-Compass project to the future operator of the services the final developments will be delivered as functioning virtual machine images in the Open Virtual Appliance (.ova) format, stripped from the ECDMS user data that was gathered during the testing phase. These virtual machine images can be deployed either in one data center or distributed over several different data centers – as has been the case within the development phase – just as the future ECDMS operator prefers.
In order to set up the service modules from scratch at their new destination several configuration steps are necessary, in particular the setup of the REST API service call addresses. These are described for each service module. In that chapter all the service characteristics are described in detail comprising the characteristics of the physical hardware and virtual machines during the development phase, information on and links to user manuals, descriptions of maintenance tasks and recurring operational tasks as well as contact information to the original developers. Service Modules also describes the known limitations in terms of scalability for the different service modules and gives advice on how to proceed if higher scalability should be required.
