Definitions

European Definitions

CLIMATE-ADAPT

Climate change refers to any change in climate over time, whether due to natural variability or as a result of human activity. [1]

This usage differs from that in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which defines 'climate change' as: 'a change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and which is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods'.

Climate change can be framed in different ways; an inventory has been made by the Dutch Climate Changes Spatial Planning research programme.

RESIN project

The RESIN project [2] gives the following definition:

Climate change refers to a change in the state of the climate that can be identified (e.g., by using statistical tests) by changes in the mean and/or the variability of its properties, and that persists for an extended period, typically decades or longer [3]

Other International Definitions

International Energy Agency (IEA)

Climate change is the change in climate (i.e. regional temperature, precipitation, extreme weather, etc.) caused by increase in the greenhouse effect. [4]

OECD

Climate change – A change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and which is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods. [5]

UNDRR/IPCC

Climate change refers to a change in the state of the climate that can be identified (e.g. using statistical tests) by changes in the mean and/or the variability of these properties and that persists for an extended period, typically decades or longer. [6]
