CLIMATE-ADAPT
RESIN project
The RESIN project [2] gives the following definition:

OECD
UNDRR/IPCC
National Definitions
Australia
Adaptation to climate change refers to adjustment in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their effects, which moderates harm or exploits beneficial opportunities. Various types of adaptation can be distinguished, including anticipatory and reactive adaptation, public and private adaptation, and autonomous and planned adaptation.
Brazil
Denmark
The measures cover a wide range. Some take precautions, others respond to changes that have already taken place. Some are initiated by the state, others by private organisations or affected individuals. Some occur independently, others are planned.
Jamaica
(States of) Jersey
In human systems, adaptation seeks to moderate harm or exploit beneficial opportunities. In natural systems, human intervention may facilitate adjustment to expected climate and its effects.
Jordan
Kiribati
Adaptation means doing something new or different to what you, your family, or the community did in the past in order to adapt to climate change.
Adaptation refers to efforts to protect against climate change impacts. (World Bank 2000)
Mexico
Nepal

These changes moderate harm or exploit beneficial opportunities and can be in response to actual or expected impacts. There are various types of adaptation, such as:
- Planned adaptation – the result of a deliberate policy decision, and most likely include action that is required to return to, maintain, or achieve, a desired state.
- Maladaptation – could mean either (1) any changes in natural or human systems which inadvertently increase vulnerability to the hazards of climate change; (2) an adaptation that does not succeed in reducing vulnerability but increases it instead; (3) spending a disproportionate amount of effort and investment on adaptation beyond what is required.
- No regret (adaptation) options – could be activities which would provide immediate economic and environmental benefits and continue to be worthwhile regardless of future climate. They
would be justified under all plausible future scenarios, including without climate change.
