Contingency (power grid) means the unexpected failure or outage of a system component, such as a generating unit, transmission line, circuit breaker, switch or electrical element. 
Civil contingency refers to risks to civilian health, safety, and property from emergencies as defined in the Civil Contingencies Act (2004) .
Contingency is a potential occurrence that is likely but not certain to happen.
