Dr. Lukas Vollmer

Lukas Vollmer uses flow models and an immense quantity of wind farm data in his work at the Fraunhofer IWES aimed at better understanding of wind farm performance. His doctoral thesis investigated means of reducing wake losses in wind farms and his first experiences with flow measurements and models were gathered while studying oceanography on a range of research ships. When he’s not dedicating his time to his kids, he also tries to lead a pub football team to the Wilde Liga amateur championship in Bremen.

In the lee of wind farms: spotlight on wake effects of wind turbines

To generate electricity, wind turbines extract kinetic energy from the wind and convert it into electrical energy. This creates a wake flow. This effect can also be seen in sailing: the leading boat interacts directly with the undisturbed wind field,…

Is the wind farm tapping its full potential? – The post-construction analysis has the answers

All wind turbine and wind farm operators and owners know what questions to expect at the end of each quarter or the year: Is the energy yield satisfactory? What does the wind farm’s yield to date mean for the future?…
