The DIESIS project [1] gives the following definition:

An ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium) is a new legal form introduced by the EC in June 2009 for providing a dedicated legal basis for new Pan-European Research Infrastructures. The conditions of an ERIC are ruled by a European Council Regulation [2].
