Brownout: Reduced voltage in certain areas which may result in flickering of lights and/or damage to equipment/appliances. [1]
Other Definitions
Brownout ist ein Spannungseinbruch in einem Stromnetz, der dazu führen kann, dass elektrische Geräte beschädigt werden oder mit verminderter Leistung arbeiten (z. B. Lichter werden dunkler). [2]
A brownout is an intentional or unintentional drop in voltage in an electrical power supply system. [3]
Intentional brownouts are used for load reduction in a grid emergency, often in a round-robin basis for areas during the period of emergency (brown-out).
A reduction or cutback in electric power (especially as a result of a shortage, a mechanical failure, or overuse by consumers). [4]
A brownout is a partial, temporary reduction in system voltage or total system capacity. [5]
Note: Rolling blackouts are controlled and usually preplanned interruptions of service.
Discussion
According to various sources an example of a brownout may also be the temporary disconnect of rural areas. The latter is considered to be a (rotational) blackout by others. No clear definitions by ENTSO-E and NERC on "brownout" have been found.
