Funding for the project allows early-career researchers to be actively involved in the research work. This includes both doctoral projects and master’s theses, which are supervised and made possible within the framework of the project. The participating students are working on various aspects of the project and introduce themselves and their research focuses here.

In my doctoral thesis, I am developing faster and more cost-effective methods for fabricating III-V tandem solar cells using MOVPE to make direct solar-to-hydrogen production more efficient. In this work, I am analyzing defects that arise at high growth rates and optimizing a novel system that incorporates plasma, ultra-fast heating/cooling, and square wafers. The goal is to achieve a GaInP/GaAs tandem solar cell with an efficiency of >30% in less than five minutes.

My dissertation focuses on the reusability of germanium substrates for III-V semiconductor devices. In this process, an electrochemical pore structure is created just below the surface, allowing the III-V semiconductor device grown on it to be detached and the substrate to be reused, which helps conserve germanium and promotes sustainability. The experiments are supported by modeling.

In my doctoral thesis, I am developing a cost-effective separation process for ultra-thin micro-CPV cells. High-precision femtosecond laser processes are among the options being considered for creating the separation grooves. The exciting challenge lies in understanding the complex interaction between the laser and the cell material and investigating its impact on cell performance.
