Scammers can create fake services, such as wallets, apps, mixers, exchanges or smart contracts that resemble legitimate ones. Total loss of funds is to be expected when users make transactions to those services. This is similar to fake bank websites, with the difference that once transacted, there is no way to stop or reverse the transaction.
Users should check apps before downloading them. This can be accomplished by checking the download rate of the app in the app store as well as by analyzing available user ratings (beware fake ratings!).
