However, to achieve high-quality studies, robust infrastructure is essential. This is where the driving simulator at Fraunhofer IIS comes in, providing the ideal environment to collect multimodal data. Here\u2019s an overview of the technology of our driving simulators and their applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The technology behind the wheel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fraunhofer IIS has two driving simulators: one located on our premises and one in the psychophysiological lab at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iis.fraunhofer.de\/en\/ff\/sse\/health\/zentrum-sensorik-medizin.html\">Center of Center for Sensor Technology and Digital Medicine<\/a> at the Universit\u00e4tsklinikum Erlangen. Key components and configuration of the driving simulators include<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>multiple monitors that enhance the immersive driving experience,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an implemented hydraulic system that simulates realistic vehicle movement through<br>cornering, vibrations, and tilting movements,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cameras,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lighting,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>systems for multimodal biosignal acquisition,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>parameters such as gaze direction or blink frequency, which can be recorded<br>continuously to assess the driver\u2019s attention in specific situations, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>health monitoring while driving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speeding Ahead: Flexibility for innovative improvements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key advantage of the automotive lab is its flexibility: The setup can be tailored to meet the specific requirements of each study or project. To get more of an idea of how the lab is already contributing to change in the automotive landscape, have a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iis.fraunhofer.de\/de\/ff\/sse\/affective-computing\/facial-analysis-solutions\/project-semulin.html\">SEMULIN<\/a> project or our study on <a href=\"https:\/\/websites.fraunhofer.de\/smart-sensing-insights\/cognitive-load-in-autonomous-driving\/\">cognitive load in autonomous driving.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By leveraging expertise from various fields and projects, our team can help determine the optimal use of the simulator and provide access to additional resources, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iis.fraunhofer.de\/de\/ff\/sse\/sse-automotive\/multimodal-data-set-for-mental-overload-adabase.html\">ADABase<\/a>, a multimodal dataset on psychological overload of drivers.
