Nach Ropohl ist die Systemtechnik eine neuartige Form, technische Probleme zu lösen. „Sie bietet neue Denkmodelle, Arbeitsmethoden und Organisationsformen für das technische Handeln an, die sich allerdings nicht so sehr auf einzelne technische Gebilde, sondern vielmehr auf komplexe technische Großsysteme in ihren ökotechnischen und soziotechnischen Zusammenhängen beziehen“. Ropohl verwendet die Begriffe „Systemtechnik“ und „Systems Engineering“ synonym.<br />

According to Ropohl, systems engineering is a new way of solving technical problems. "It offers new models of thought, working methods and forms of organisation for technical action, which, however, do not relate so much to individual technical entities, but rather to complex large-scale technical systems in their eco-technical and socio-technical contexts". Ropohl uses the terms "systems technology" and "systems engineering" synonymously.<br />
