Demnach lassen sich Engineering-Prozesse als die technisch-orientierten Planungs-, Definitions-, Konzeptions-, Dokumentations- und Simulationsprozesse von Produkten und Services im gesamten Produkt- sowie Service-Lebenszyklus definieren. Engineering ist heute primär ein Informationsprozess, der vor allem im Umfeld von Industrie 4.0 immer enger in Materialprozesse eingebunden wird. Neben den Prozessen beinhaltet das Engineering auch die entsprechenden Methoden, IT-Werkzeuge und Organisationsstrukturen sowie die hierzu erforderlichen Kompetenzen.<br />
