Jane Goodall. Marie Curie.<br \/>\nJennifer Doudna. Tiera Guinn.<br \/>\nAda Lovelace.<br \/>\nWas verbindet uns?<\/p>\n<p>Neugier und das Streben, den Dingen tiefer auf den Grund zu gehen. Und: unser Geschlecht. Wir sind Frauen in der Wissenschaft \u2013 Wissenschaftlerinnen. Heute ist der Ada Lovelace Day, er findet allj\u00e4hrlich an jedem zweiten Dienstag im Oktober statt und wurde nach mir benannt, um mich als erste Programmiererin zu ehren und die Frauen in Naturwissenschaften, Informatik, Mathematik und Technischen Berufen sichtbar zu machen.<\/p>\n<p>Denn immer noch sind Frauen in der Wissenschaft unterrepr\u00e4sentiert, ihr Anteil in der industriellen Forschung und Entwicklung ist niedrig, und ebenso selten sind Lehrst\u00fchle und Leitungspositionen durch Frauen besetzt.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Wir sind bereits auf einem guten Weg, aber wir m\u00f6chten noch mehr tun<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Im ADA Lovelace Center wollen wir dazu beitragen, Frauen mehr Raum in der Forschung zu geben. Michaela Benz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Wer bist du und was ist deine Aufgabe im ADA Lovelace Center?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Mein Name ist Michaela Benz und ich leite die Applikationen \u00bbRobuste KI f\u00fcr Digitale Pathologie\u00ab und \u00bbEmPath &#8211; Empowering Pathologists with AI Authoring\u00ab im ADA Lovelace Center. Unser Ziel ist es, robuste und mit wenig Daten anpassbare KI-Verfahren f\u00fcr die Pathologie zu entwickeln, mit denen man beispielsweise die Tumorzusammensetzung automatisch analysieren kann. \u00a0Die Kompetenzs\u00e4ulen \u00bbFew Labels Learning\u00ab und \u00bbFew Data Learning\u00ab spielen daher eine gro\u00dfe Rolle und durch die Fragestellungen aus den Applikationen arbeite ich auch in diesen S\u00e4ulen mit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wie bist du zum Fraunhofer gekommen und was fasziniert dich an deiner Arbeit in der angewandten Forschung?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Mich faszinieren besonders die interdisziplin\u00e4re Zusammenarbeit und die Einblicke in medizinische Fragestellungen. Zudem finde ich es spannend an der Schnittstelle zwischen Forschung und Transfer in Anwendungen zu arbeiten. Mein beruflicher Werdegang war nicht geradlinig. Nach meinem Lehramtsstudium hat es mich gereizt noch etwas Neues zu Lernen. Dabei habe ich zuf\u00e4llig den Aushang f\u00fcr eine Promotionsstelle in einem interdisziplin\u00e4ren Sonderforschungsbereich an der Universit\u00e4t entdeckt. Dar\u00fcber sind dann auch Kontakte ans Fraunhofer IIS entstanden.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Was w\u00fcrdest du jungen Frauen mitgeben, die sich f\u00fcr eine wissenschaftliche Laufbahn interessieren?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Ich finde die Verbindung mit anderen Wissenschaftlerinnen wichtig, da das zus\u00e4tzliche gegenseitige Motivation schafft und man sich \u00fcber Fragestellungen und Themen austauschen kann, die einen umtreiben. Jessica Deuschel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Wer bist du und was ist deine Aufgabe im ADA Lovelace Center?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Mein Name ist Jessica Deuschel und ich forsche gemeinsam mit meinen ADA Lovelace Center-Kollegen daran, wie Informationen aus unterschiedliche Modalit\u00e4ten verkn\u00fcpft werden k\u00f6nnen, um daraus automatisch auf affektive Zust\u00e4nde schlie\u00dfen zu k\u00f6nnen. Der Fokus unserer Applikation \u00bbNachvollziehbare KI zur multimodalen Zustandserkennung\u00ab liegt hierbei auf dem Zustand der \u00dcberforderung, der sich beispielsweise durch Ver\u00e4nderungen in Modalit\u00e4ten, wie der Augenbewegung, Pupillengr\u00f6\u00dfe, der Mimik oder Biosignalen wie EKG oder Hautleitf\u00e4higkeit zeigt. Besonders spannend finde ich auch die Fragestellung, wie man die einzelnen Sensoren abh\u00e4ngig von ihrer Zuverl\u00e4ssigkeit kombinieren kann, um eine h\u00f6here Transparenz und Robustheit zu erm\u00f6glichen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wie bist du zum Fraunhofer gekommen und was fasziniert dich an deiner Arbeit in der angewandten Forschung?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Ich kam \u00fcber das ADA Lovelace Center zum Fraunhofer IIS. Nach meinem Mathestudium wollte ich gerne tiefer in den Bereich Datenanalyse und lernende Verfahren einsteigen und wurde von meinem Professor auf das ADA Lovelace Center aufmerksam gemacht.<\/p>\n<p>An der angewandten Forschung, speziell im Bereich multimodaler Zustandserkennung, fasziniert mich das Zusammenspiel aus einem breiten Spektrum unterschiedlicher Bereiche wie Bildverarbeitung, Medizintechnik, Psychologie und KI. Paulina Sierak<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Wer bist du und was ist deine Aufgabe im ADA Lovelace Center?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Mein Name ist Paulina Sierak und ich leite gemeinsam mit Prof. Bernd Bischl und Prof. Thomas Seidl von der LMU die Gruppe Data Efficient Automated Learning. Innerhalb der Gruppe besch\u00e4ftigen wir uns mit Themen aus dem ADA Lovelace Center, insbesondere mit den \u00a0S\u00e4ulen K1 Automated Learning und K4 Few Labels Learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wie bist du zum Fraunhofer gekommen und was fasziniert dich an deiner Arbeit in der angewandten Forschung?<br \/>\n<\/strong>In meiner bisherigen Karriere hat mir die Zeit im Bereich der angewandten Forschung w\u00e4hrend meiner Promotion am meisten Freude bereitet: Neue Ideen zu kreieren, neue Fragen zu stellen, Dingen auf den Grund zu gehen. Das hat mich einfach begeistert. Auch kam ich in der Zeit erstmals mit Maschinellem Lernen (ML) in Kontakt. Dieses Thema \u2013 und insbesondere auch die Anwendung von ML in der Produktion \u2013 wollte ich weiter erforschen. Mich fasziniert es, neuen Anwendungsfeldern und neuen Problemstellungen aus unterschiedlichen Technologien innerhalb der Dom\u00e4ne der Produktion auf den Grund zu gehen. Meine Leitfrage ist, WIE ein Problem gel\u00f6st werden kann und nicht OB.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Was w\u00fcrdest du jungen Frauen mitgeben, die sich f\u00fcr eine wissenschaftliche Laufbahn interessieren?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Es ist wichtig, sich im Klaren dar\u00fcber zu sein, ob frau grundlagenorientiert oder anwendungsorientiert forschen m\u00f6chte. Wenn die Antwort \u201eanwendungsorientiert\u201c ist, bewerbt euch bei Fraunhofer \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Auch unser Institut, das Fraunhofer IIS, f\u00f6rdert Frauen in der Wissenschaft und k\u00fcmmert sich unter anderem um weiblichen Nachwuchs: Das \u00bb<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iis.fraunhofer.de\/de\/jobs\/mentoring-studentinnen.html\">josephine\u00ae Mentoring-Programm<\/a>\u00ab richtet sich an Studentinnen der MINT-F\u00e4cher und stellt diesen Mentorinnen an die Seite. Der regelm\u00e4\u00dfige Austausch dient der beruflichen Orientierung. Dar\u00fcber hinaus gibt es ein begleitendes Rahmenprogramm, um Kompetenzen gezielt zu f\u00f6rdern.<\/p>\n<p>Die Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft setzt sich insgesamt f\u00fcr die F\u00f6rderung von Wissenschaftlerinnen ein. Vor einigen Tagen erst fand der <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraunhofer.de\/de\/jobs-und-karriere\/wissenschaftlerinnen\/wissenschaftscampus.html\">Wissenschaftscampus<\/a> \u2013 das Sprungbrett f\u00fcr Frauen in die Forschung \u2013 in M\u00fcnchen und Holzkirchen statt.<\/p>\n<p>Es gibt weiterhin auch das Programm \u00bb<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraunhofer.de\/de\/jobs-und-karriere\/wissenschaftlerinnen\/fraunhofer-talenta.html\">TALENTA<\/a>\u00ab der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft mit dem Ziel, Frauen f\u00fcr die angewandte Forschung zu gewinnen und zu f\u00f6rdern.<\/p>\n<p>Wir suchen Verst\u00e4rkung und freuen uns \u00fcber Bewerbungen!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Women research ahead!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Margaret Hamilton. Jane Goodall. Marie Curie. Jennifer Doudna. Tiera Guinn. Ada Lovelace.<br \/>\n<strong>What connects us?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Curiosity and the desire to get to the bottom of things. And: our gender. We are women in science &#8211; scientists. Today is Ada Lovelace Day, celebrated annually on every second Tuesday in October, and named after me to honor me as the first female programmer and to give visibility to women in science, computer science, mathematics and technical professions.<br \/>\nThis is because women are still underrepresented in science, their share in industrial research and development is low, and chairs and leadership positions are just as rarely held by women.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We are already well on our way, but we want to do more<br \/>\n<\/strong>At the ADA Lovelace Center, we want to help make more room for women in research. Michaela Benz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Who are you and what is your function at the ADA Lovelace Center?<br \/>\n<\/strong>My name is Michaela Benz and I lead the applications &#8220;Robust AI for Digital Pathology&#8221; and &#8220;EmPath &#8211; Empowering Pathologists with AI Authoring&#8221; at the ADA Lovelace Center. Our goal is to develop robust AI methods for pathology that can be customized with little data, for example, to automatically analyze tumor composition.\u00a0 The competence pillars &#8220;Few Labels Learning&#8221; and &#8220;Few Data Learning&#8221; therefore play a big role and due to the questions from the applications I also work in these pillars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you come to Fraunhofer and what fascinates you about your work in applied research?<br \/>\n<\/strong>I am particularly fascinated by the interdisciplinary collaboration and the insights into medical issues. I also find it exciting to work at the interface between research and transfer into applications. My professional career was not straightforward. After completing my teaching degree, I was tempted to learn something new. By chance, I discovered a notice for a doctoral position in an interdisciplinary collaborative research center at the university. That&#8217;s how I got in touch with Fraunhofer IIS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What advice would you give to young women who are interested in a career in science?<br \/>\n<\/strong>I think it&#8217;s important to establish connections with other female scientists, because that creates additional mutual motivation and you can exchange ideas about issues and topics that are concering you all. The josephine\u00ae mentoring program for female students at Fraunhofer IIS, for example, is one way to do this. Jessica Deuschel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Who are you and what is your function at the ADA Lovelace Center?<br \/>\n<\/strong>My name is Jessica Deuschel and together with my ADA Lovelace colleagues I am researching how information from different modalities can be linked to predict automatically affective states. The focus of our application &#8220;Comprehensible AI for multimodal state recognition&#8221; is on the state of being overwhelmed, which is manifested, for example, by changes in modalities such as eye movement, pupil size, facial expression, or biosignals such as ECG or skin conductivity. Furthermore I find the question very exciting of how to combine individual sensors depending on their reliability to enable greater transparency and robustness particularly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you come to Fraunhofer and what fascinates you about your work in applied research?<br \/>\n<\/strong>I came to Fraunhofer IIS through the ADA Lovelace Center. After my math studies, I was interested in going deeper into the field of data analysis and learning methods. I was made aware of the ADA Lovelace Center by my professor.<br \/>\nWhat fascinates me about applied research, specifically in the area of multimodal state recognition, is the interplay from a wide range of different fields such as image processing, medical engineering, psychology, and AI. Within the group we deal with topics from the ADA Lovelace Center, in particular with the pillars K1 Automated Learning and K4 Few Labels Learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you come to Fraunhofer and what fascinates you about your work in applied research?<br \/>\n<\/strong>During my career until now, I have most enjoyed the time working in the field of applied research during my PhD: Creating new ideas, asking new questions, getting to the bottom of things. That simply excited me. It was also during this time that I first came into contact with machine learning (ML). I wanted to explore this topic further &#8211; and especially the application of ML in production. I am fascinated by getting to the bottom of new application areas and new problems from different technologies within the domain of manufacturing. My driving question is HOW a problem can be solved, not IF.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What advice would you give to young women who are interested in a scientific career?<br \/>\n<\/strong>It is important to be clear about whether you want to do basic or applied research. If the answer is &#8220;application-oriented,&#8221; apply to Fraunhofer \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our institute, Fraunhofer IIS, also promotes women in science and, among other things, takes care of young female scientists: The &#8220;josephine\u00ae Mentoring Program&#8221; is aimed at female students of STEM subjects and provides them with mentors. The regular exchange serves as a career orientation.
