CIPRNet project
The CIPRNet project [1] uses the following definition:
“A cascading failure occurs when a disruption in one infrastructure causes the failure of a component in a second infrastructure, which subsequently causes a disruption in the second infrastructure.” (source: [2]
RESIN project
The RESIN project [3] gives the following definition:
A sequence of events in which each individual event is the cause of the following event; all the events can be traced back to one and the same initial event.[4]
National Definitions
Germany
Sequence of events in which each individual event is the cause of the following event; all the events can be traced back to one and the same initial event. [5]
Standard Definition
NERC
The uncontrolled successive loss of system elements triggered by an incident at any location. Cascading results in widespread electric service interruption that cannot be restrained from sequentially spreading beyond an area predetermined by studies. [6]
