European Definitions

ENTSO-E
Availability is a measure of time during which a generating unit, transmission line, ancillary service or another facility is capable of providing service, whether or not it actually is in service. [1]

EU JRC
For HVDC schemes, the term availability represents “energy availability”. Energy availability is the ability of a HVDC scheme to transmit, at any time, power up to the rated power. [2]

Hence, a converter scheme which can transmit 1.0 pu power for 100% of the time would have an energy availability of 100%. Any outage of the HVDC scheme or, for example, the outage of one pole in a bipole, will impact the energy availability, reducing the figure to less than 100%.

Availability: The degree to which a system, subsystem, or equipment is operable and in a committable state at the start of a mission, when the mission is called for at an unknown, i.e., a random, time. [17]

Note 1: The conditions determining operability and committability must be specified. Note 2: Expressed mathematically, availability is 1 minus the unavailability.

Availability: The ratio of (a) the total time a functional unit is capable of being used during a given interval to (b) the length of the interval. [17]

Note 1: An example of availability is 100/168 if the unit is capable of being used for 100 hours in a week. Note 2: Typical availability objectives are specified in decimal fractions, such as 0.9998.

Germany
