The definitions below refer to Adaptation to Climate Change.

Definitions

European Definitions

EU

Adaptation: Adjustment in natural or human systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their effects, which moderates harm or exploits beneficial opportunities. Various types of adaptation can be distinguished, including anticipatory, autonomous and planned adaptation. [1]

RESIN project

The RESIN project [2] gives the following definition:

The process of adjustment to actual or expected climate, and its effects. [3]

Other International Definitions

UNISDR/IPCC

Adaptation: The adjustment in natural or human systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their effects, which moderates harm or exploits beneficial opportunities. [4]

National Definitions

Netherlands

Adaptatie is aanpassing aan klimaatverandering. [11]

The measures cover a wide range. Some take precautions, others respond to changes that have already taken place. Some are initiated by the state, others by private organisations or affected individuals. Some occur independently, others are planned.

Germany

Adaptation denotes measures used to equip natural and artificial systems to survive the effects of climate change while suffering as little harm as possible. [12]

United Kingdom (UK)

Adaptation is a change in natural or human systems in response to the impacts of climate change. [13]

These changes moderate harm or exploit beneficial opportunities and can be in response to actual or expected impacts. There are various types of adaptation, such as:

  1. Planned adaptation – the result of a deliberate policy decision, and most likely include action that is required to return to, maintain, or achieve, a desired state.
  2. Maladaptation – could mean either (1) any changes in natural or human systems which inadvertently increase vulnerability to the hazards of climate change; (2) an adaptation that does not succeed in reducing vulnerability but increases it instead; (3) spending a disproportionate amount of effort and investment on adaptation beyond what is required.
  3. No regret (adaptation) options – could be activities which would provide immediate economic and environmental benefits and continue to be worthwhile regardless of future climate. They

would be justified under all plausible future scenarios, including without climate change.

Other Definitions

Scotland

Climate change adaptation: Adjustment in natural or human systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their effects, which moderates harm or exploits beneficial opportunities. [14]
